Supporting Noyce Scholars Through the Use of Open Portfolios: A Model from UTeach Maker

Goals

In this session participants will:
1) Learn about the maker movement and the connection to STEM teacher preparation
2) Analyze an open portfolio model used for micro-credentialing
3) Reflect on the use of open portfolios in other contexts

Evidence

Existing at the intersection of the arts, crafts, engineering, mathematics, science, and technology, making is made visible through the breadth and depth of what makers create (Marshall & Harron, 2018). UTeach Maker uses an open portfolio to document, share, and assess the work of Noyce scholars and other new teachers in the program. This portfolio is a publicly accessible, openly networked platform that allows participants to capture, curate, and share work. It serves to highlight the creator’s unique voice, abilities, and interests. Portfolios have been used in the assessment process in writing and art classrooms as a standard (e.g., Gardner, 1989; Wolf, 1989; Yancey, 2009). By helping to showcase their work, open portfolios have the potential to support Noyce scholars by highlighting their knowledge and skills in a public forum. Gardner, H. (1989). Proposal

Participants will be introduced to making, the UTeach Maker program, and the open portfolio process used for micro-credentialing. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the portfolios of current and former Noyce scholars and will have time to survey the rubrics provided for national reviewers. The session will include a Q & A with a current scholar from the program and will give participants the chance to consider how an open portfolio might be useful in their own program context.
