Goals
Attendees will:
1. Understand possible opportunities for developing teacher leadership skills through online and remote instruction
2. Understand the limitations for developing teachers leadership skills through online and remote instruction
Evidence
Evidence presented will include pre/post survey outcomes for 12 teachers who participated in an online/remote course designed to provide and develop specific leadership skills. Changes in teachers’ understandings about and confidence to engage in certain leadership activities will be presented as well as interview data. Data analysis methods included descriptive statistics and thematic data analysis. The data corpus will demonstrate the potential for and limitations to remote and online course instruction focused on developing certain leadership skills.
Proposal
This session is designed to overview a semester-long remote/online course designed to support teacher engagement in leadership opportunities. Pre/post survey results and interview data suggest online course instruction can effectively support teacher leadership skills; in particular action research, peer professional development; and facilitation of learning communities when instruction purposefully integrates planning for leadership, implementation, and subsequent reflection. This research uniquely demonstrates the potential for remote instruction to support teacher leadership as well as its limitations.
