Abstract

In this project, we will focus on the impact and influences of culture within the community from the perspective of equity throughout education. Oftentimes, educators do not receive support from the community, thus creating a level of separation between the educators and the students. When a community is supportive and involved in the students’ learning, the students have the motivation to grow in their knowledge. Through this, the teachers also receive support through the community. Culturally relevant pedagogy can help bridge this gap through understanding and cultural appreciation. Culturally relevant pedagogy involves the educators learning and including the students’ values and culture. This pedagogy is centered around the student, so that positive relationships can be built between the teacher, student, and families. This way of teaching can help motivate the students to become more proactive in their learning. In addition, community involvement could be increased through activities outside of the classroom such as community STEM Nights. The opportunities where the community can learn about the students’ education can help the people be more supportive and involved.
