Abstract
The implementation of teaching practices grounded in aspects of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) have received increasing attention by teachers as a way to support the development of students “soft skills” as well as mental health concerns. When implemented correctly, SEL supports students in the understanding and management of their emotions, form positive relationships, and create responsible decisions. These skills create a safe and supportive environment that promotes student learning, all while preparing students for future personal and professional challenges. The focus of this poster presentation is to clarify what SEL is, what it is not, what effective implementation looks like, and how to communicate this information to parents and guardians. This presentation will also address common misconceptions about SEL and how teachers can address these misconceptions.
