Abstract

The Noyce Science program at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) focuses on recruiting, preparing, and retaining exceptional individuals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to meet the high demand for STEM teachers in school districts with high need schools such as the Omaha Public School (OPS) District. Our program has paved new pathways at UNO which allow students to earn both a disciplinary undergraduate degree and secondary teacher certification while in the College of Arts and Sciences. Being our first year with the program, I centered in on preparation. This included expanding my expertise in the Science Education field by conducting a CURE research laboratory with fellow UNO students, performing biology/bioinformatics research, and expanding my network with biology teachers at a school in the OPS district.
