Implementing Building Thinking Classrooms in a Direct Classroom

Abstract

Building Thinking Classrooms is a way to design a mathematics environment to center students as solvers of problems and doers of mathematics. This, and many classroom models like it, focus on average classrooms, with average sizes, and average students. Teachers in self-contained and specialized classrooms with small numbers of students have a near impossible time implementing such recommendations. This research project adapts the concepts and recommendations from Building Thinking Classrooms for a direct class of four student. The poster will detail the teacher’s in-depth plan for implementation including a timeline, goals, and research based rational for each adaptation. Following the implementation will be a reflection on successes and potential changes for the next cycle of implementation.
