Abstract

This poster is the culmination of a year-long case study focused on student engagement in my second grade classroom. As part of the Tufts Noyce program, Teaching Fellows develop dilemmas, or problems of practice, and spend a year investigating them. This year, I focused on students who meet all behavioral expectations in my classroom, but do not often participate in learning activities verbally or nonverbally. Throughout the course of the year, I tracked six focal students’ participation in learning activities through video and other data collection methods. I tried and evaluated several interventions related to student engagement. My goal was to increase my capacity for engaging students in whole group learning activities, and to create a classroom environment in which students are able to learn from each other as much as from me.
