Abstract

As future secondary mathematics teachers and Noyce participants, we are encouraged to not only consider our content knowledge and teaching practices, but also how we can best learn about and understand ourselves and our students as culturally responsive teachers. A major piece of this is being socially and emotionally competent and responsive educators. In 2023, organized a book club with both pre-service teachers and faculty around the book Permission to Feel: Unlock the Power of Emotions by Marc Brackett. Marc Brackett is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and has spent his career trying to help people understand their emotions and use them so they can help rather than hinder their success. As pre-service teachers we realized the importance of spreading the message of reflecting inward on our emotions around teaching, learning, mathematics, and life while also engaging in conversations with peers and faculty mentors. On this poster we will share how we designed and organized this student-led professional development book club series. We will include discussion prompts and student and faculty feedback about the book club experience. Finally, we will share key takeaways not only from the book, but also the opportunity to lead this opportunity and its impact on our own leadership development.
