Abstract
Our program is at a liberal arts university with 3,000 students and we have roughly 6 Noyce Scholars each year. All scholars are in the university’s Master of Education (MAE) program and continue for one to two years of induction support as teachers of record. Equity Seminars (ES) and Induction Seminars (IS) are an integral part of our Track 1 grant. These monthly evening sessions are designed to help Noyce Scholars (i) contextualize culturally-sustaining pedagogy into their specific teaching experiences and (ii) develop as a community. During ES and IS, Noyce Scholars check-in with each other; learn from guest speakers, including local teachers and administrators; discuss ways to adapt curriculum to make it more culturally sustaining; and share artifacts from their teaching. ES and IS are designed to provide multiple communities of support to complement and extend what is provided in their MAE and school communities. In our poster presentation, we’ll explore the ES & IS structure, detailing covered topics over time with relevant material links. We’ll also examine the significance of community for novice teachers, emphasizing its impact and importance. Furthermore, two scholars/new teachers will share their experiences, underscoring the influence of mentorship provided by PIs, highlighting the importance of collaborative idea-sharing, peer support, mentorship, and guest speakers in addressing specific needs and goals effectively.
