Abstract

The Noyce Math and Science Teaching Scholarship program at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) provides mathematics and science students with a full-year teacher preparation experience in an exemplary teacher’s classroom in the San Bernardino City Unified School District. The Noyce Program at CSUSB gives students an immersive experience of teachers’ responsibilities in terms of lesson planning, classroom management, and building relationships with students. One major part of the program includes monthly professional development with mentors and scholars in which they participate in enriching activities and learning strategies that could be implemented in the classroom. One of our biggest takeaways from the program was learning to lesson plan around the 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions (Smith and Stein, 2018). We will share some of these lessons we implemented in face-to-face and virtual settings with different technology platforms including Desmos, Nearpod, and Classkick.
