Category of scholarship/fellowship:
Noyce Scholar

Name of Noyce institution:
Florida State University FSU-Teach

Current academic or teaching status:
Senior

School and school district:
Leon County Schools

Background:

My mom has worked for the school district since I was a kid, and I always loved going to work with her and being in the school setting. I would volunteer in the classrooms, the office, the library, anywhere they needed help. Since I have been in college, I have been involved in tutoring many different ages and subjects.

Why do you want to teach:

I enjoy helping other people no matter what the circumstances might be. It is very rewarding to me to see a student’s face light up when she or he makes a connection with a certain concept.

Describe a memorable teaching experience:

I currently tutor Florida State athletes and everyday I have different ones asking if I am available to tutor them and fit them into my schedule. It makes me feel really appreciated knowing that these students want my help. They see the success of their teammates who I tutor and also want my help.

What does the Noyce program mean to you:

As a part of the Noyce program, we have gone out to see different communities and interactions between students of various cultures. This is providing me with information and preparation for when I become a teacher in high needs schools.
