Category of scholarship/fellowship:
Noyce Scholar

Name of Noyce institution:
Newberry College/ RE-MAST

Current academic or teaching status:
Junior

School and school district:
Newberry

Background:

I am a hard-working student that is involved in many organizations on campus. I love music and enjoy playing my flute.

Why do you want to teach:

For the past few years, I have worked in daycares and enjoy teaching. I also have a passion for math. I want to encourage students to like and understand math instead of fearing the subject.

Describe a memorable teaching experience:

I teach toddlers in afternoon during the summer. We teach baby sign language so the children can learn manners at an earlier age. I signed certain words every time I said them. I had a new class and on the second day, all of the students were signing “more” even the fourteen month old. I was so proud.

What does the Noyce program mean to you:

The Noyce program has given me an opportunity to meet other prospective teachers as well as current teachers. I also am able to learn new strategies that I will be able to use my own classroom in a few short years. I am very grateful to be given this opportunity.
