Noyce Scholar Profile

Nicholle Stark

Undergraduate major or graduate field of study: Chemistry

Subject area(s) and grade level teaching focus: Chemistry and Mathematics

Category of scholarship/fellowship:
Noyce Scholar

Name of Noyce institution:
Michigan Technological University

Current academic or teaching status:
Senior

School and school district:
Arthur Hill, Saginaw, MI

Background:

I first attended University of the Sciences in Philadelphia where I was studying Pharmaceutical Chemistry. I transferred to Michigan Tech then shortly after changed my major.

Why do you want to teach:

Too many kids don’t have anyone that has high expectations for them. As a result, they do not try as hard to reach their full potential. I want to be that person in their life that pushes them to be the best they can be.

Describe a memorable teaching experience:

I spent three weeks teaching 20 girls from Detroit about solar and wind power. It was a great learning experience and well as a wonderful time getting to know all the girls. I learned how to interact with girls from different backgrounds and relate to them. I also learned how to have fun in the classroom while still maintaining control of my classroom.

What does the Noyce program mean to you:

The Noyce program has been an opportunity to experience workshops and other things that are preparing me to teach in a high need school. It is wonderful to see a program that focus on the schools that teachers typically do not want to teach at.
