Noyce Scholar

Name of Noyce institution:
University of South Carolina

Junior

Airport High School

Background:

I come from a diverse school district in a Philadelphia suburb. I now attend the University of South Carolina where I am in the honors college. I look forward to obtaining my master’s degree and to teaching.

Why do you want to teach:

I have had many tutoring experiences already in my life, and it is something that I really enjoy doing. I also feel that I am a good tutor and have received many compliments. I look forward to sharing my knowledge of mathematics with high school students.

Describe a memorable teaching experience:

This past semester, I helped a girl with mathematics who had already failed her pre-Calculus class twice. She came to me once a week, and we went over her homework and tests as I taught her the material she didn’t understand. At the end of the semester, she had earned a B in the class. I was so proud of her as well as myself for helping her pass the class.

What does the Noyce program mean to you:

Obviously the Noyce Scholarship has made paying for college much easier for me. Besides that, I am able to take a special class available only to Noyce Scholars that prepares me to be a teacher. I am looking forward to observing in a classroom, as well as attending a mathematics teaching conference in October.
