Noyce Scholar Profile

Eddie Shivers

Undergraduate major or graduate field of study: Mathematics

Subject area(s) and grade level teaching focus: Mathematics 6-12 grade

Category of scholarship/fellowship:
Master Teaching Fellow

Name of Noyce institution:
University of South Florida/Robert Noyce STEM Grant

Current academic or teaching status:
First year graduate student

School and school district:
No previous teaching experience

Background:

I’ve recently completed my B.A. in Mathematics since returning to college after starting college over 20 years ago.

Why do you want to teach:

I would like to help impact students’ education in mathematics. I’ve observed through the years a shortage of math teachers with a math background.

Describe a memorable teaching experience:

My trigonometry teacher would not allow us to use calculators in the class. I remember learning interpolation by hand. This teacher also would drill the class in reciting the squares of numbers 1 -25 in under 30 seconds. This stands out in memory because she impressed upon the class the importance of relying on our learning skills over a calculator.

What does the Noyce program mean to you:

The Noyce program means an opportunity of a life time for me. I am deeply grateful and all the more motivated to achieve the best that I can.
