Subject area(s) and grade level teaching focus: Pre-AP Earth Science, Physical Science, grade 8

Category of scholarship/fellowship:
Fifth year or post-baccalaureate Noyce scholar

Name of Noyce institution:
Virginia Commonwealth University /VCU Noyce Initiative

Current academic or teaching status:
1st year teacher

School and school district:
Albert Hill Middle School, Richmond City Public Schools

Background:

I grew up in Philadelphia and still consider that home. I currently live in Richmond, VA with my husband Matt, our dog and two cats. On weekends you can find us walking along the river, cooking with friends, exploring a new restaurant, or, of course, grading papers!

Why do you want to teach:

I began teaching as a graduate student of Geography and decided to pursue this avenue. I am passionate about public understanding of science and strive to help my students relate the curriculum to their lives.

Describe a memorable teaching experience:

My first science fair was an exciting time. After many months of hard work and guidance, it was rewarding to see my students stand proud next to their boards and present all they had done.

What does the Noyce program mean to you:

Going into teaching was a weighted decision. Pursue a second graduate degree would not be inexpensive and teaching is not exactly known for the high payroll. Noyce made it possible for me to pursue my passion without taking on the burden of extra loans. I also appreciate the Noyce community and all it has to offer.
