Noyce Scholar Profile

Mimi Nguyen

Undergraduate major or graduate field of study: Mathematics

Subject area(s) and grade level teaching focus: 7-12 Mathematics

Category of scholarship/fellowship:
Noyce Scholar

Name of Noyce institution:
University of Texas at Arlington

Current academic or teaching status:
Senior

School and school district:
N/A

Background:
I am a student of the UTeach program who is one semester away from her student teaching capstone!

Why do you want to teach:
Teaching is learning and I think I will learn so much more about math while engaging my students in discussions. I want a career that will keep me on my toes and surely enough teaching fits that! I also just love seeing things click in students’ minds, especially from the ones who don’t think they’re “good” at math.

Describe a memorable teaching experience:
I am a math tutor at TCC and although it isn’t teaching, I still get to share knowledge with students. Once, a student came in not knowing how to factor by FOILing. When I sat down and explained the process to him, he lit up and said my method was so useful to him. I have never forgotten it because there is just something about being responsible for someone else’s learning and growth.

What does the Noyce program mean to you:
The Noyce program has allowed me to feel more connected to the teaching world as I complete my degree. It also has been helping me financially especially when I start my capstone and cannot hold my regular job.
