Background:

I grew up in northern Colorado, and continue to live there. Between my parents, both of whom were very involved in math and science, and my own schooling, I grew to love science and math. This led me to my current studies in biology. I have since gained interest in other subjects such as language, but nothing can take away my interest and love for science!

Why do you want to teach:

I want to teach because I feel deeply afflicted with the current situation of many schools in the US right now. Countless studies come out about how we should focus more on academics, or the character of students, but I feel like what is truly needed are effective teachers. The most effective teachers in my life were able to fuel me in both regards. I also love these students, as they begin to delve into the bigger world, and begin to discover who they are and what they are made of. I want to help students discover these things.

Describe a memorable teaching experience:

Last spring, I was observing at a local high school. There were two boys who had done mostly nothing the entire period, and my host teacher could do very little to motivate them. As I walked by, I noticed one of the boys drawing in a unique kind of typography. I complimented him on the drawing, and asked that he do the work that was assigned. Both boys went back to working, and I feel like if anything, it was the compliment that drove them to do at least a little work for me.

What does the Noyce program mean to you:

The Noyce program has been a huge support to me. The directors and staff at Noyce have both pushed me and cheered me on as I continue my schooling. I also have met a few companions whom have helped me in similar ways.
