Background:

I am married and a mother of 3 children. I went back to school in 2005, and have been ever so slowly working on my degree. I was born and raised in Arizona and have had GREAT teachers all throughout my education. I am currently in the third block of the teaching program at Arizona State University (ASU). I am also a student in the College of Technology and Innovation in the Applied Biological Sciences Department and do independent study work with one of my professors in the ASU plant herbarium. I am also currently studying for the SRM plant ID test.

Why do you want to teach:

I have had many teachers who have helped shape me into the person I have become. They not only taught me content knowledge, but life lessons as well. I want to be that kind of teacher to youth. There are so many kids out there who need positive role models in their lives. I hope to be one for all the students I will have.

Describe a memorable teaching experience:

Since I am still an intern and do not spend too much time in the classroom, my most memorable teaching experiences come from teaching my own children. I love seeing the looks on their faces when they finally understand something. And it really isn’t so much that I taught them anything in particular, but it was the fact that I was there at a critical moment in their discovery of something new, and that I could guide them to it.

What does the Noyce program mean to you:

I am new to the program this year and already I can see the impact it will make not only on my professional life as a teacher, but my personal life as well. The scholarship has been a huge blessing to my family. It is a struggle sometimes to survive and raise three kids on one income. I am also really excited about the opportunities I will have in being a part of the Noyce program. I am looking forward to the people I will meet, and the conferences I will attend that will improve my ability to be a great teacher.
