Steven Garmon

Undergraduate major or graduate field of study: Mathematics

Subject area(s) and grade level teaching focus: Math and secondary education

Category of scholarship/fellowship:
Noyce Scholar

Name of Noyce institution:
Utep

Current academic or teaching status:
Junior Undergraduate

School and school district:
Tutor/Austin High School

Background:

Born and raised in El Paso, Tx. Attended public school and always had to be the center of attention or class clown. Was always good at math so I figured I would pursue a career in it.

Why do you want to teach:

Teachers are one of the most, if not the most, influential role models in students lives. It is their job to mold these kids and prepare them for life. I believe I am capable of doing this, and not only that but it truly excites me! I cant wait to impact these kid’s lives and do the best I can to prepare the following generations for life.

Describe a memorable teaching experience:

I remember cheating on a test in junior high and having my teacher catch me. He took me into the hall and told me he didnt care about the act itself but rather what it implied. He said i lacked integrity and told me integrity was everything. To this day that remains in my head and helped mold me into the man I am today.

What does the Noyce program mean to you:

So far, it has helped me tremendously. The seminars I have attended have completely changed my idea of teaching. Without them I wouldnt have changed my view of teaching from a traditionalist view. Ive learned a lot about inquiry-based learning and cant wait to see what else I’ll be enlightened to.
