Noyce Scholar Profile

Katherine Fallis

Undergraduate major or graduate field of study: Secondary Math Education

Subject area(s) and grade level teaching focus: Mathematics, Grades 6-12

Category of scholarship/fellowship:
Noyce Scholar

Name of Noyce institution:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis

Current academic or teaching status:
Senior

School and school district:
Chapel Hill, Wayne Township

Background:

I have been involved with tutoring for the past 4 years, and before that I worked at a Daycare/Preschool where I was a teacher for 6 years.

Why do you want to teach:

I want to teach because I want to make learning fun for students. I want them to get excited about mathematics and be able to see how having a strong background in mathematics will help them in their future endeavors.

Describe a memorable teaching experience:

There are so many memorable experiences, but the one that stands out the most is when I was teaching at George Washington Community High School. There was a young man there who really struggled with math and was painfully shy. During my time there, I was able to get him to see the value in learning and understanding math. It was a very long but rewarding process.

What does the Noyce program mean to you:

The Noyce scholarship and other resources offered by the program have meant everything to me. Without these benefits, I would not be able to afford to go to college and perfect my skills as a teacher.
