Noyce Scholar Profile

John Docter

Undergraduate major or graduate field of study: Chemistry

Subject area(s) and grade level teaching focus: Chemistry, grades 9-12

Category of scholarship/fellowship:
Master Teaching Fellow

Name of Noyce institution:
University of Louisville

Current academic or teaching status:
Graduate level

School and school district:
Jefferson County Public Schools

Background:

I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry at the University of Louisville (U of L). I am currently enrolled in my first semester of graduate classes at U of L with the end goal of obtaining a degree of Master in the Art of Teaching.

Why do you want to teach:

I truly enjoy working with young adults and have always had a passion for the learning and schooling processes. I have many relatives who teach, and the career has always been appealing to me.

Describe a memorable teaching experience:

I volunteered as a tutor at the Portland Promise Center here in Louisville with limited expectations. Working and building bonds with the children at this center for low-income families has been an amazing experience and inspired me even more to become the best teacher I can be.

What does the Noyce program mean to you:

The Noyce program has allowed me the opportunity to afford my education. If not for the Noyce program, I would have had to try to work as a substitute teacher or classroom teacher with very little experience, which would have been detrimental to myself and my students. The Noyce program has allowed me to gain meaningful experience and learn valuable teaching tools that will help me to succeed in my future classroom.
