Background:

I grew up in Arlington, Texas with my husband, Blake. I am a junior in the middle level education program at UT Arlington. This program has pushed me farther than I expected. It has simply just made me even more eager to teach. I would love to come back to get my masters in Math Education. My dream position would to be, while teaching middle school math, to teach other teachers how to teach math.

Why do you want to teach:

Even before I started school I wanted to teach. When I finally started school and I got to first grade and started learning about adding and subtracting. This was the most amazing thing I had ever learned. I had seen Algebra from my great grandfather who taught college Algebra. I decided I could do that and would teach my 3-year-old brother how I thought you did Algebra. I could not be told I could not teach. When I was told it was my 5-year-old cousin’s turn to “play” teacher, I decided to be the principle and show him how to teach his classroom. Since then I have always had a desire to teach.

Describe a memorable teaching experience:

When I was a senior in high school I was on the dance team. My best friend and I had decided to start our own dance class that we offered for free. Having those girls in that class so excited to learn because some of them their parents could not afford dance classes warmed my heart. Unfortunately, the location we were using for free got new management and the new management would not let us continue. I miss them every day.

What does the Noyce program mean to you:

The Noyce program has offered me the chance to go to school with fewer worries. My husband makes very little but works very hard. We recently had a beautiful baby boy. Without the help of this scholarship I would have the hard decision to make of dropping out this close to graduation or not making it financially. This is that important to me. Without this we would not be able to survive financially and make my dream of becoming a teach come true
