Background:
I am a studying mathematics and secondary education at California State University Dominguez Hills. I am part of the Noyce scholars program.
Why do you want to teach:
I want to be able to make a difference when I become a teacher. I was very fortunate to have the greatest teachers and professors throughout my scholastic years, and they made a great impact on my life. Making a lasting and positive impression is exactly what I want to do for the students I teach. I love to teach and help others.
Describe a memorable teaching experience:
One of the most memorable teaching experiences was when I was a freshman in college. I was offered a tutoring position for a group of students for a pre-calculus class. I walked in the classroom with no experience, and was extremely nervous. I began tutoring, and the entire two hour session was very smooth. I was able to accommodate all the students and all their questions, and they were able to understand everything I taught them. After the tutoring was over, I received compliments from all the students; they even told me that I would be a great teacher. After this first session of tutoring, I was motivated to continue tutoring the students throughout the semester, and as a result, they all passed and thanked me. I can say that up to this day when I come across them, they still thank me. I was proud that I was able to make a difference and motivate them to pass. It was a great feeling for me to be able to help them, and this is what really pushed me to becoming a teacher.
What does the Noyce program mean to you:
The Noyce program has helped me to stay on track, even through rough times. I would consider the Noyce program as my mentor, counselor, inspiration, and financial provider. If it was not for the program, I would be lost and behind with my schooling. The Noyce staff has been especially wonderful with me. They have treated me like family. I am both thankful and proud to be part of such an outstanding program.
