Noyce Scholar Profile

Stephanie Alderman-Oler

Undergraduate major or graduate field of study: Secondary Education and Biology

Subject area(s) and grade level teaching focus: Biology and Chemistry, grades 5-12

Category of scholarship/fellowship:
Noyce Scholar

Name of Noyce institution:
Kansas State University

Current academic or teaching status:
Senior (Undergraduate)

School and school district:
Manhattan, KS

Background:

I am from the Kansas City area and am currently a senior at Kansas State working on both a Biology degree and a Secondary Education Degree. I am very involved in our Kappa Delta Pi honor society and several other student organizations on campus.

Why do you want to teach:

I have grown up in a family of teachers and have always been taught the value of education and teaching. This was solidified in high-school, where I was lucky to have had several great teachers. I want to share that experience with other students.

Describe a memorable teaching experience:

My in-classroom experiences have been limited so far, but I have really enjoyed working with various organizations to promote chemistry education through chemistry demonstration outreach teams. It is great to reach an audience ranging from 3rd graders to adults and see an interest in science.

What does the Noyce program mean to you:

This program has given me an opportunity to focus on my education and being a successful student–so that I can eventually be a successful teacher. The professional development and support system have been great.
