Need
The Noyce Scholars Program is designed to encourage excellence in science and mathematics teaching. One of the key indicators of excellence is a long-term commitment to professional development. Our local Noyce Scholars Program attempts to instill professional development as central to excellence by providing funding as part of each student’s Noyce award.
Goals
As mentioned above, we include PD funding as part of each award. We follow-up with the students to be sure they take advantage of this funding. Our web site lists many possible PD opportunities. It is our goal that each student attend at least one PD event during the year.
Approach
All scholars are required to submit requests to use their PD funding prior to their travel in the same way educational professionals must. If students haven’t used their funding in the first semester of their award, we personally follow-up with them to be sure they take advantage of this opportunity.
Outcomes
Below is a partial list of the PD conference sponsors in which our scholars have participated:
1.) The Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education
; 2.) The American Association of Physics Teachers
; 3.) American Mathematics Association
; 4.) National Science Teachers Associations; and 5.) TODOS: Mathematics for ALL
Broader Impacts
We have yet to assess the impact on our scholars. It is on our to do list.
