Need
New York City College of Technology (City Tech) and Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), neighboring CUNY institutions, are implementing a Noyce Teacher Scholarship Phase I program (NEST) that increases the number of highly qualified STEM teachers in high need school districts in Brooklyn and the New York metropolitan area.
Goals
The overarching goal is to increase the number of highly qualified STEM teachers in high need school districts in Brooklyn and the New York metropolitan area.
Approach
Students at City Tech and BMCC participate in teaching internships at local middle schools and high schools in NYC and/or with Professors. Scholarships are also available and students participate in a STEM summer program.
Outcomes
This program will increase the number of STEM teachers in high need school districts in Brooklyn and the New York metropolitan area.
Broader Impacts
By increasing the number of high quality STEM teachers, this will address the problem of the shortage of STEM teachers in the local NYC area.
