Need

The Noyce program at Millersville University provides preservice teachers with experiences that push them to: a. confront their own beliefs about students in high-needs schools, b. examine methods to engage students, and c. participate in mathematical communities beyond their classroom. The overarching goal is to increase the number of highly qualified teachers in high-needs schools.

Goals

Each year, a cohort of scholars develops a focus (i.e., technology, manipulatives, afterschool program). They learn about the focus and present what they have learned at the Annual Meeting of the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Through a variety of field experiences (i.e., purposeful placement for student-teaching and methods courses, Philadelphia Urban Seminar Experience, tutoring), our scholars gain perspective on teaching high-need students in urban and rural settings. The graduate-level courses foster the continuation of our scholarly community beyond pre-service years. These courses promote skills necessary as scholars transition through two phases: graduation to their first days and beyond the first year.

Approach

The PI and Co-PI work with the Scholars to develop a level of expertise in an area that they share at a State-level conference.

Outcomes

Our scholars have presented at six conferences. The number of student-teachers placed at high-needs schools for their field experiences prior to the Noyce grant was approximately 5%.

Broader Impacts

After Millersville University received the Noyce grant this number went up to 33%. Through the Noyce grant, Millersville University has been able to strengthen our relationships with local high-needs schools (i.e., School District of Lancaster).
