Need
This collaborative project conducts a mixed-method study to investigate the development of STEM teacher candidates among collaborating Noyce institutions in Florida and Texas.
Research Questions
What are the demographics and qualifications of the STEM teacher candidate pool, and how do they change during the training process? Do different programs have varying levels of success getting candidates (especially high-priority ones) through their programs? How do local high need districts perceive teachers coming from Noyce institutions?
Approach
Mixed method research included programmatic data inventory of participating Noyce institutions, alumni survey of graduates of participating institutions, and a semi-structured interview of Noyce Scholar cooperating teachers, university program support personnel, human resource/other licensure personnel who supported the scholars, and school administrators from the districts where the Noyce Scholars completed their student teaching.
Outcomes
Interview data analysis is in progress. Selected emerging themes will be presented, with implications for STEM teacher pipeline to high need school districts.
Broader Impacts
Gain a clearer understanding of STEM Teacher preparation and supply to high need school districts in Florida and Texas.
