Need

Our scholarship program was established in an effort to attract more highly qualified mathematics teachers. Given that there is a shortage of mathematics teachers, this program is serving a very important purpose.

Goals

Besides attracting highly qualified mathematics majors into teaching, once we offer a Noyce scholarship to a future teacher, we provide continued support after they graduate. Our program obtained funds to provide summer professional development which has been very well received. Scholars from western region programs are invited to join our summer workshops. It is an excellent opportunity to have scholars from different backgrounds to form support systems and learn from each other about the teaching of mathematics.

Outcomes

We have awarded 49 scholarships to future mathematics teachers.
We plan to apply for new funding to continue our work after Phase II funding.

Broader Impacts

We have awarded 49 scholarships to future mathematics teachers.
We plan to apply for new funding to continue our work after Phase II funding to disseminate our model for summer workshops.
