ARISE Research Community Webinars

ARISE (Advancing Research & Innovation in the STEM Education of Preservice Teachers in High-Need School Districts), organized by AAAS, is designed to respond to the national call for a change in STEM teacher education and professional development, and in teacher certification.

ARISE seeks to (a) develop a research agenda to help build effective STEM teacher preservice education and leadership development programs for high-need schools, and (b) develop a blueprint for innovation in STEM teacher preservice education and leadership development programs, particularly as related to high-need schools.

ARISE will provide resources, tools, and a community for current and prospective researchers and teacher education programs.  One resource is a series of webinars on topics critical to the preparation and retention of teachers.


Culturally Relevant Pedagogy in the Preparation of Teachers to Work in High-Need School Districts

November 28, 2019

Continuing the discussion from our Active Learning Week webinar around supporting learners of all abilities, this session delves into how to ensure teachers are equipped to enact classroom practices that are culturally responsive—fully grounded in the lived experiences of students, inclusive of all races/ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic statuses.  Presenters will share evidence and best practices around 1) practice-based teacher preparation; 2) fostering and assessing critical science teaching agency; and 3) teacher leadership for promoting a growth mindset to support the development of underserved students.  it is hoped that participants will seek to implement these active learning pedagogies in their own practice and work as change agents at the forefront of STEM teacher education reform.

Supporting All Learners Using Active Learning Pedagogy

October 25, 2018

Coinciding with both Active Learning Week and Disability Awareness Month, this webinar focuses attention on evidence and best-practices around 1) Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a research-based framework that addresses the wide range of variability found in today’s learners; 2) effective instructional approaches to promote STEM achievement for students with disabilities; and 3) inquiry-based engineering design. It is hoped that participants will seek to implement these active learning pedagogies in their own practice and contribute to the growing, exciting field.

The Role of Teacher Preparation Programs in Retention of STEM Teachers in High-Need Schools

September 27, 2018

While there are many factors influencing STEM teachers’ decisions to stay in positions for which they were prepared, this webinar focuses attention on better understanding relevant factors directly in the control of or able to be influenced by teacher preparation programs. STEM teacher workforce retention study results, research design, and policy work will be shared to encourage application of evidence-based methods and inform further exploration.
